How to Get from Asunción to Puerto Iguazú

Asunción, Paraguay's capital, is about 330 km from Puerto Iguazú by road. The journey crosses eastern Paraguay to Ciudad del Este and crosses the border via the Friendship Bridge to Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, before crossing into Argentina.

Transport Options

1. Long-Distance Bus

Several companies run the Asunción → Ciudad del Este route (4-5 hours). From there you need to cross to Foz do Iguaçu and take transport to Puerto Iguazú. The total journey can take 6 to 8 hours with connections and border waits.

Advantage: affordable
Disadvantage: multiple connections, two border crossings, fixed schedules

2. Driving / Rental Car

The main route is Asunción → Ciudad del Este via Ruta 2 (Mariscal Estigarribia), cross to Foz via the Friendship Bridge, and from Foz to Puerto Iguazú via the Tancredo Neves Bridge.

Time: 5-6 hours excluding border waits
Important: check insurance and vehicle documentation requirements for crossing two borders (Paraguay → Brazil → Argentina)

3. Flight to Foz do Iguaçu + Transfer

There are no direct flights from Asunción to IGR (Puerto Iguazú). The alternative is flying to Foz do Iguaçu (IGU) and taking a private transfer from Foz to IGR airport or directly to your hotel.

Border Crossings

The journey involves two border crossings:

Paraguay → Brazil (Friendship Bridge, Ciudad del Este → Foz do Iguaçu)
Brazil → Argentina (Tancredo Neves Bridge, Foz do Iguaçu → Puerto Iguazú)
