How the border crossing works
The crossing between Puerto Iguazú (Argentina) and Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) takes place over the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, spanning the Iguazu River. It is the only direct land route between the two cities.
The process involves two immigration checkpoints: exit from one country and entry into the other. Each direction requires stopping at both posts.
Documents by nationality
| Nationality | Required document | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, etc.) | National ID or passport | The ID must be in good condition and current |
| Associated countries (Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia) | National ID or passport | Check current agreements |
| Other nationalities | Valid passport + visa if required | Check with the relevant consulate before travelling |
Step by step
Argentina → Brazil
- Argentine exit control — Present your document; they register your departure. If driving, there may be a vehicle check.
- Cross the bridge — About 3 km between the two immigration posts.
- Brazilian entry control — Present your document; you receive an entry stamp. They may ask your reason for travel and accommodation details.
Brazil → Argentina
The same process in reverse: exit Brazil, cross the bridge, enter Argentina.
With a private transfer
With a private transfer to Brazilian Falls, the driver knows the process and stops at each immigration post. You don't need to worry about the route or parking. The driver waits while you complete the checkpoint.
On your own
If you cross by international bus, the vehicle stops at both posts. If using a taxi, confirm with the driver that they complete the full crossing — some only go as far as the bridge. Make sure they wait during the checks.
Travelling with children
Requirements for minors are stricter and vary by situation:
- With both parents: child's ID or passport + both parents' documents.
- With one parent: a notarised authorisation from the absent parent may be required.
- With a third party: notarised authorisation from both parents, legalised.
Estimated waiting times
| Situation | Estimated time per direction |
|---|---|
| Weekday, low season | 15–30 minutes |
| Weekend or high season | 30–60 minutes |
| Long weekends or holidays | Can exceed 1 hour |
These times are approximate. Allow extra time if you have a flight or a scheduled excursion.
Tips for a smooth crossing
- Keep documents accessible — Everyone in the vehicle must present their own document.
- Make copies — Keep digital copies on your phone.
- Duty Free — The duty-free shop is on the Brazilian side; coordinate the stop with your driver if using a transfer.
- Check document validity — A damaged ID or expired passport may prevent crossing.
- Visa required? Apply in advance — Visas are not issued at the border post.
- Carry cash — In both currencies if possible; not all shops near the border accept cards.
Crossing to Paraguay
From Foz do Iguaçu you can cross to Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) via the Friendship Bridge. There is no direct bridge from Puerto Iguazú to Paraguay; you cross by boat or go through Brazil first. Immigration requirements are different and must be confirmed separately.
